The goal of this study is to better understand that which contributes to the long-term recovery of people who have sustained a traumatic brain injury. To better understand an individual’s recovery following a head-injury, we will measure and examine the chemicals released in the brain and blood following the injury. We will also take images of the brain to examine changes in its structure. Additionally, we will use neurological assessments and questionnaires to evaluate brain functioning and patient symptoms. We will use these imaging and biological markers, “biomarkers”, to relate the severity of the brain injury with brain recovery (neurological outcome) and post-injury symptoms. The long-term goal of this study is to provide physicians with the knowledge and tools they need to evaluate an individual’s recovery following a brain injury and to treat symptoms affectively as they occur.
