Brief description of study
The BRCA Founder Outreach (BFOR) Study is a new research initiative. BFOR seeks to increase access to testing for one of the most common tests for hereditary cancer, BRCA genetic mutations. These mutations of BRCA genes are associated with greater risks for several types of cancer, including breast, ovarian, and prostate cancer. BFOR will provide patients, families, and their doctors with better information to make important decisions about their health care. This information will help thousands of people to reduce their cancer risks.
Detailed description of study
The goal of the study is to examine novel ways to increase access
to BRCA genetic testing in order to improve health care for Ashkenazi Jewish
men and women — and ultimately the broader population. This study provides BRCA
genetic tests to women and men of Ashkenazi (Eastern European) Jewish ancestry
at no cost to the participant. To register, participants will enroll at
https://www.bforstudy.com/. Participation involves creating an account, completing an informed consent process, learning about BRCA mutations and completing a survey. Once that is complete, you will go get a blood test done at a facility near you and receive your genetic test results from either your own primary care provider or a genetic counselor from the study.
