Brief description of study

The heart is the most metabolically active organ. Model organisms indicate that aberrant metabolism contributes to heart failure, but data in human subjects is insufficient. New mass spectrometry methodologies allow evaluation of metabolism with great precision. We therefore plan to study human cardiac metabolism by quantitatively comparing levels of nutrients (e.g., sugars, amino acids) that enter the heart versus those that leave the heart. This will be achieved by drawing arterial and venous cardiac blood from patients undergoing electrophysiological studies, who therefore already have the relevant vessels cannulated for clinical purposes. Patients will be consented, and no intervention will occur.
