Brief description of study
Do you often struggle to fall asleep at night? The University of Pennsylvania, in partnership with Advanced Medical Electronics, have developed a low-risk, non-pharmacologic intervention that can be implemented on mobile devices for the treatment of insomnia.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of this smartphone-delivered behavioral treatment for insomnia in older adults. This is a remote telehealth study, which means that all study procedures are conducted online and/or by phone.
Detailed description of study
There will be a two-week pre-intervention screening period, where you will be asked to answer questions about your current sleep patterns and provide details on your health. You will also be asked to download and use a smartphone application, called TapToSleep, to fill out a "sleep diary" twice a day. A sleep diary is like a short survey that asks about your daily sleep habits, such as what time you get into bed and what time you wake up in the morning.
If you remain eligible after the 2-week pre-intervention period, you will be randomly assigned to one of two groups, both of which include behavioral interventions that may improve insomnia symptoms. You will be asked to use the TapToSleep app and communicate with the study staff regularly during the intervention period. There will be a follow-up interview two months after the intervention ends. In Total, your participation in the study will last three and a half months.
